WhatsApp Testing AI-Powered Chat Summaries and Writing Help

WhatsApp is rolling out new AI-powered features aimed at making message management and communication easier—especially for users who often return to long, unread chat threads.

AI Summaries for Unread Messages

Spotted by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing a feature on Android that summarizes unread messages using Meta AI. When enabled through an opt-in system called Private Processing, the app replaces the standard “X unread messages” label with a new “Summarize with Meta AI” button for large message backlogs. Tapping it gives users a brief summary of the conversation.

Privacy Comes First

WhatsApp assures that message content is not stored or linked to user identities. Summaries are processed in a secure, isolated cloud environment and are deleted immediately afterward. Additionally, the feature is automatically disabled in chats with Advanced Privacy, even with end-to-end encryption enabled.

Writing Help: AI-Powered Message Editing

Also in development is a new tool called Writing Help, which allows users to adjust the tone or improve the clarity of their messages before sending. This feature will also use the Private Processing system, maintaining the same privacy standards as AI summaries.

Limited Availability (for Now)

Currently, these features are only available to select users in the Android beta, with a gradual rollout. There’s no word yet on availability for iOS or specifics on language and regional support.

WhatsApp’s AI Push Goes Beyond Apple

With Meta bringing more AI tools to WhatsApp, users could soon enjoy smarter, privacy-conscious ways to manage and send messages, no Apple Intelligence required.
