Trump Criticizes Apple’s Move to India: Pushes for US Manufacturing

Trump’s Warning to Tim Cook

US President Donald Trump has publicly rebuked Apple CEO Tim Cook over the tech giant’s growing investment in India. Speaking during a Middle East tour, Trump said he had a “little problem” with Cook after learning Apple plans to manufacture more iPhones in India to avoid tariffs on Chinese goods.

“We Want You to Build Here”

Trump, referring to Apple’s $500 billion US investment pledge, urged Cook to shift production back to American soil. “We’re not interested in you building in India. India can take care of themselves… we want you to build here,” Trump emphasized.

India’s Growing Role in Apple’s Supply Chain

Apple aims to produce 25% of global iPhones in India within the next few years. Foxconn and Tata Electronics are already ramping up production in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, helping make mobile phones one of India’s top exports.

Challenges of US iPhone Manufacturing

Experts warn that shifting iPhone production to the US could raise prices to $1,500–$3,500 per device due to labor and supply chain constraints. Apple currently manufactures only a few products, like the Mac Pro, domestically.

Market Impact and Ongoing Talks

Following Trump’s comments, Apple shares fell over 1%. While Trump claimed Apple would “up” US production, no concrete plans were shared. Meanwhile, India and the US continue trade talks, potentially impacting future tech manufacturing decisions.
