Major Carmakers Back Away from Apple CarPlay Ultra Plans

Apple’s next-generation CarPlay system, CarPlay Ultra, is facing unexpected resistance from several major automakers just a month after its official unveiling.

What is CarPlay Ultra?

Announced at WWDC 2022 and showcased again in 2023, CarPlay Ultra takes Apple’s in-car experience to a new level by replacing the entire dashboard interface. It’s designed to show vehicle information like speed, fuel, temperature, and more, alongside traditional iPhone apps—creating what Apple describes as “a unified and consistent experience across all the driver’s screens.”

Automakers Now Opting Out

A new Financial Times report reveals that several high-profile brands are backing away from supporting CarPlay Ultra. These include:

  • Mercedes-Benz
  • Audi
  • Volvo
  • Polestar
  • Renault

These manufacturers were originally part of Apple’s 2022 list of 14 partner brands but are now distancing themselves, primarily over concerns about ceding control of in-car software and the potential loss of revenue from their own infotainment ecosystems.

A Renault executive reportedly told Apple: “Don’t try to invade our own systems.”

Where Other Brands Stand

BMW, not part of Apple’s original partner list, says it will support standard CarPlay but not CarPlay Ultra.

Audi echoed similar views, prioritizing its own “customized and seamless digital experience.”

Jaguar Land Rover, Ford, and Nissan have yet to clarify their current positions, only stating that they are still evaluating or have no updates to share.

Still Committed: A Few Partners Remain

Despite the setbacks, some manufacturers remain committed:

  • Aston Martin is currently the only automaker shipping vehicles with CarPlay Ultra.
  • Hyundai, along with its Kia and Genesis brands, remains on board.
  • Porsche plans to support the system in the future.

Apple Responds

In response to the growing list of withdrawals, Apple told the Financial Times:

“We’re collaborating closely with automakers to provide the best of iPhone and the best of the car and this work takes time.”

No Timeline Yet

As of now, there is still no confirmed release date for when CarPlay Ultra will appear widely in vehicles beyond Aston Martin.
