Apple Watch Ultra 3: Major New Features Coming This Fall

Apple’s rugged smartwatch is finally getting a meaningful upgrade this fall. While the Apple Watch Ultra hasn’t seen a big refresh since 2023 (aside from the sleek black titanium finish), the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3 is set to introduce three standout features that should excite adventurers and health-focused users alike.
Built-in High Blood Pressure Monitoring
Health features have always been a cornerstone of the Apple Watch lineup, and this year is no different. The Ultra 3 is expected to debut native high blood pressure detection, a capability that’s been in development for years. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is finally ready to roll out this long-anticipated health feature, making it easier than ever for users to monitor cardiovascular health on the go.
Satellite Messaging Without an iPhone
One of the biggest changes coming to Ultra 3 is satellite-based messaging, independent of the iPhone. While iPhones have supported emergency satellite communication since the iPhone 14, this will be the first Apple Watch to feature its own satellite messaging capability. The feature will be handy for hikers, explorers, and outdoor enthusiasts who often find themselves far from cell service, and want to leave their iPhones behind.
5G RedCap Connectivity
For the first time, Apple Watch is stepping into the world of 5G. The Ultra 3 will reportedly support 5G RedCap, a lower-power version of 5G designed specifically for wearables. While it won’t offer the blazing speeds of full 5G, RedCap will bring faster and more reliable connections than LTE, without draining the battery.
More Upgrades on the Horizon
Aside from these headline features, Apple is also expected to include a new processor and improved OLED display, likely bringing it in line with the upcoming Apple Watch Series 10. While leaks have been limited so far, everything points to Apple reinforcing the Ultra 3’s reputation as the ultimate smartwatch for adventurers and outdoor athletes.
