Apple’s M5 Chip Arrives This Fall: Here’s What to Expect

Apple is gearing up to launch its next-generation M5 chip this fall, marking another step in its rapid Apple Silicon evolution. Here’s a look at the first products to get the upgrade and what else is on the horizon.
M5 Debuts in MacBook Pro and iPad Pro
Unlike last year’s M4 rollout, which debuted on the iPad before arriving on the Mac, the M5 chip will launch simultaneously on both the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro this fall. Apple is expected to announce the new devices in October or November, with the MacBook Pro lineup receiving:
- MacBook Pro with M5
- MacBook Pro with M5 Pro
- MacBook Pro with M5 Max
Meanwhile, the iPad Pro will also get the M5 as part of a routine performance upgrade, following the major M4 redesign in 2024.
No Major Design Changes — Yet
Both the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro are expected to retain their current designs, as this year’s update is largely seen as a spec bump. A more substantial M6 MacBook Pro redesign with an OLED display is rumored for 2026.
New Apple Studio Display May Accompany Launch
Apple is reportedly working on a new Studio Display, which could launch alongside the M5 MacBook Pro. If so, we may see the company highlight the MacBook Pro’s advanced external display capabilities as part of the launch.
What Comes Next?
The M5 chip will initially be limited to the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro, with other Macs expected to adopt the chip in early 2026 and beyond. iPadOS 26 is likely to play a central role in marketing the updated iPad Pro.
Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to Apple’s fall event.
