Apple’s Foldable iPhone Development Moves Forward Ahead of 2026 Launch

Apple is accelerating development of its long-rumored foldable iPhone, which is now on track for a potential launch in the second half of 2026. Recent reports indicate the company has entered the early prototyping phase with suppliers, signaling significant progress.
Foldable iPhone Enters Prototype 1 (P1) Stage
According to DigiTimes, Apple began Prototype 1 (P1) development in June 2025. This stage involves the creation of fully functional units for initial testing. Apple typically goes through three prototype stages (P1 to P3), each lasting around two months, before moving to the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) phase.
Once EVT is completed, the device will go through Design Verification Testing (DVT) and Mass Production (MP), similar to the development process of traditional iPhones.
Advanced Display and Hardware Testing
Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected to feature a 7.58-inch display, titanium chassis, and dual 48MP rear cameras, though final specs have yet to be confirmed. One of Apple’s top priorities appears to be minimizing the screen crease, which is a major criticism of current foldable devices.
iPhone 17 Air as a Stepping Stone
Some industry watchers believe the design of the upcoming iPhone 17 Air serves as a precursor to the iPhone Fold. Apple is said to be applying its typical strategy of entering a market late but with refined hardware and user experience.
Foldable iPad Project Reportedly Paused
While the development of the foldable iPhone moves ahead, Apple has reportedly paused work on a foldable iPad. Sources cite manufacturing challenges, high production costs, and limited consumer demand for large-screen foldables as key reasons behind the decision.
Launch Expected Alongside iPhone 18
If development continues on schedule, Apple’s first foldable iPhone could launch alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in fall 2026.
