WhatsApp Is Finally Getting Usernames

A Long-Awaited Privacy Feature
WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a major new feature: usernames. This long-requested addition will enable users to connect without revealing their phone numbers — a significant step forward for privacy.
Spotted in Beta Testing
The feature was discovered by WABetaInfo (via Tecnoblog) in a recent TestFlight beta for iOS. Although it’s not live yet, the backend code suggests WhatsApp is actively working on a username system similar to what Telegram and Signal already offer.
How It Will Work
Usernames will serve as an alternative identifier to your phone number. When someone contacts you without already having your number, they’ll see your username instead. Once you claim a valid handle, WhatsApp will confirm it with a fun confetti animation.
Username Updates Will Notify Others
If you decide to change your username later, WhatsApp will automatically notify your contacts in chats, much like it already does for profile photo or phone number updates.
Web Version Support Coming Too
A future update to WhatsApp Web will include a tool to check the availability of usernames, making the process even more user-friendly.
When Will It Launch?
While there’s no official release date yet, the presence of the feature in beta builds suggests it’s not far off. This follows closely on the heels of WhatsApp's long-awaited iPad app launch.
