iPhone 17 Pro Camera Review from Photographer Austin Mann

Travel photographer Austin Mann is back with his in-depth review of the iPhone 17 Pro camera system. Known for pushing new iPhones to their limits, Mann tested Apple’s latest flagship while cycling more than 150 miles in the mountains of northeastern Italy — climbing nearly 20,000 feet along the way.

Favorite Upgrade: 48MP Telephoto Lens

Mann’s highlight this year is the new 48MP Telephoto lens with both 4x (100mm) and 8x zoom options. He says the 4x zoom feels far more natural and useful compared to the 5x zoom of the iPhone 16 Pro:

“These focal lengths feel right and open up opportunities to capture fresh perspectives.”

Center Stage Front Camera

Another favorite feature was the Center Stage front camera, which automatically adapts to include multiple people in frame. Mann praised its hands-free ease while cycling:

“These ‘surprise and delight’ features are my favorite… they make the experience better without asking anything of you.”

Other Highlights from the Review

Beyond the telephoto and front camera, Mann also shared impressions on:

  • The new Bright photographic style

  • iOS 26 Camera app updates

  • Apple’s new Crossbody Strap accessory

  • And more

Thoughts on iPhone Air

Mann briefly mentioned the iPhone Air, calling it a “beautiful device” with a strong main sensor, but noted that the lack of Ultra Wide and Telephoto lenses felt too limiting for his photography needs.
