Apple Clarifies iPhone 17 Pro Durability in Talk with 9to5mac’s Chance Miller

As reported by Chance Miller at 9to5mac.com, Apple has addressed rising concerns about the iPhone 17 Pro’s aluminum body and its susceptibility to scratches and marks.

The “Scratchgate” Story

Bloomberg first reported on launch day that demo units of the iPhone 17 Pro in Apple Stores were showing visible marks, particularly around the MagSafe cutout. This quickly led to the so-called “scratchgate.”

Apple’s Explanation

In response, Apple explained to 9to5mac’s Chance Miller that the marks aren’t scratches but material transfer from worn MagSafe stands used in retail displays. The company says these can be cleaned off and is working to replace the affected stands. Even some iPhone 16 models on display have shown similar marks.

Camera Plateau Concerns

Meanwhile, YouTuber JerryRigEverything highlighted how the raised edges around the iPhone 17 Pro’s camera plateau are more prone to scratches. Apple said these edges use the same anodized aluminum as other Apple products, like MacBooks, and while durable, they may still show normal wear and tear over time.
